Signs It’s Time for a Career Change

By Scott Suryan

Quitting your job to pursue your own business is not an easy decision to make; it requires a lot of thought, planning, and courage. However, a career transition can also be necessary to reach your full potential and to find professional fulfillment.

While being your own boss can result in higher job satisfaction, it's important to know when it's time to take the leap. In this post, we'll discuss some signs that it may be time to quit your job and start your own business.

1. You Are Burned Out

When you’re working hard, it is normal to be tired at the end of the day. But there's another level of exhaustion that you might be struggling with: burn out.

If you are feeling burned out, you might have trouble generating new ideas at work or feeling motivated to work on a project. You may become more irritable or impatient with your co-workers or your clients. When these feelings are persistent, you are experiencing burnout, and it might be time for a change.

2. You Are No Longer Passionate about Work

When you first started your job, you might have felt like it was a good fit or even your dream job. You were most likely excited and very motivated. However, over time, that passion may have dwindled.

If you dread going to work or just can't find the motivation to work on your current projects, it might be time to consider pursuing career options you are passionate about. When you're running your own business, you have the freedom to pursue your interests and make a difference in a way that aligns with your values.

3. You Hit a Glass Ceiling

Opportunities for growth are critical for career fulfillment and personal growth. Unfortunately, many jobs hit a glass ceiling over time. Maybe there aren't any available positions for advancement on your career path, or perhaps you've maxed out your salary.

It can be frustrating to feel like you are not being compensated fairly or that your hard work is not rewarded. Unfortunately, many people feel like there isn't room for career development at their current company. If you have stagnated in your career, consider a change that would allow for unlimited, self-directed growth.

4. You Are Not Happy with Company Culture

Company culture and working conditions can have a big impact on your job satisfaction. If you're not happy with the culture at your current job, it may be time to consider starting your own business.

When you're running your own business, you get to create the culture that you want. You can set your own values and create a positive work environment that aligns with your beliefs. Good company culture can result in increased job satisfaction and employee engagement.

5. Money Is Your Only Reward

Of course, money is important when we make career choices, but it should not be the only thing that drives you to get up in the morning. You spend a huge percentage of your life at work, and that work should make a difference. You job should also be fulfilling personally and help you push yourself mentally. If paying your bills is the only reason you go to work, it might be time for a change.

6. You Want More Work-Life Balance

The traditional 9-to-5 work schedule can cause you to miss out on a lot, especially if you have younger children. If your job requires a lot of travel, that's more time away from family and friends.

One of the biggest benefits of running your own business is the flexibility that it provides. If you want to take off during the day to go to your kid's baseball game, do it! If you want more control over your schedule and the ability to work from anywhere, starting your own business may be the right choice for you. Business ownership can be especially appealing if you have a family or other long-term commitments that require flexibility.

7. You Are Tired of the Commute

The average commute to work in America is 30 minutes. That's a total of about an hour each day that is lost to simply driving in traffic. Commuting can be a major source of stress and frustration.

If you're tired of spending hours each day commuting to and from work, starting your own business can be a great way to eliminate that stress. You can choose to work from home or find an office space that's closer to your home, which can save you time and reduce your stress levels.

8. You Are Bored

It's part of human nature to want to learn more and be challenged. If you have been in your role or at your current company for a while, you might be bored. The challenges and problems that once seemed so complex may feel mind-numbing now. You may have reached your career goals.

Not having engaging and mentally stimulating work to do can cause you to become disengaged and burned out. Switching career paths and becoming your own boss can help get those creative juices flowing again.

9. You Are Jealous of Others

Do you ever listen to your friends or family members talk about their work and get jealous? It's normal to envy someone's hybrid work schedule or their new company car. However, if you constantly think that other careers seem more appealing than your own, then make a change!

Jealousy can fill you with resentment, cause you to become disengaged in your current job, and lead to unhappiness. To avoid that outcome, pursue something else.

Ultimately, these signs could help you determine if now is the right time to leave your current career to pursue your own business.  If you want to learn about career changers and
