Look at Life’s Setbacks as Opportunities

Each of us faces disruptions to our daily routines that can throw us off our game. Having the hot water heater go out in the middle of a morning shower can negatively adjust your mood for several hours. An accident that blocks your route and causes you to run late for an important meeting creates a high level of stress that affects your ability to stay focused and organized.

While it might seem that some of the daily setbacks you experience are major hurdles, many can be overcome with some planning and restructuring. Sometimes, you need to adjust your mood or plans, and others require an unexpected financial outlay.

More extreme obstacles enter your life and defeats can really knock you down. These life-altering setbacks have such a huge impact on your ability to react that they require a complete restructuring of every aspect of your existence.

Any number of professional and personal traumas can lead to devastating setbacks in your life. The good news, however, is that you can use them to create new opportunities from what seems like the ashes of destruction.

4 Strategies To Turn Setbacks into Opportunities

1. Focus

It's natural to take a moment to regroup and reflect on what's happened to you. In fact, you need some time to catch your breath and go through a grieving process in order to move forward.

In his book, A Setback Is A Setup For A Comeback, motivational speaker Willie Jolley puts the idea of setbacks in perspective by stating that everyone encounters them at one time or another. The goal, however, to overcome your obstacle is to "face it, and trace it, [so] we can learn how to avoid it in the future."

What that means is to have an honest discussion with yourself about which areas of your behavior or circumstance didn't work, and from that reflection, look at changes you can make in the future to create a more successful outcome.

Once you remove the stigma you've attached to your specific setback, you can refocus your outlook from negativity to one that reflects what you want your future to become.

Your direction is determined in large part by where you focus your energy.

2. Decision

It's sometimes easy to forget when you're in the throes of recovering from a major setback, but it's worth noting that both success and failure are decisions. If you truly want to be successful, you have to decide on winning. That means you must prevail over the setback you've encountered.

Some of your decisions may include seeking professional advice from a trusted mentor who sees your vision in a positive light and can help guide you to a realistic and successful outcome.

Another aspect of the decision-making process is to clearly define where you see yourself or your goal in the future and work back from there to create the steps you need to take to achieve it.

3. Action

Unless you put those strategies you created during the decision-making process into action, your vision is only a dream.

Whatever the setback was that knocked you off your feet, it is going to continue to have control over you until you take the necessary action to change your future. With action, you own your responsibility.

4. Desire

This is the point where you decide how badly you want to make a change that turns a setback into an opportunity. If you truly want it, and you have the desire, you're going to make the effort to achieve your goal. Rather than viewing the risks involved as intimidating roadblocks, you see them as opportunities for opening new doors.

Examples of Turning Setbacks into Successes

Use some of the experiences of those you know to be highly successful to help guide you through your own challenges. Each one of them faced major adversity in their life but overcame it.

1. J. K. Rowling

Rowling endured a series of misfortunes in short succession, which included the loss of her mother. Two months after the birth of her daughter, Rowling separated from her husband, with whom she was living in Portugal. She returned to the United Kingdom with her infant daughter, took out a restraining order against him, filed for divorce, and lived in poverty while continuing to write the first book of her phenomenally successful Harry Potter series.

2. Michael Jordan

Despite Jordan's status as one of the all-time greatest basketball players, he's certainly had to put his share of failures into proper perspective. He summarizes the reason he's become so successful in the following quote: "I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

3. Albert Einstein

Einstein traveled a long arduous road to winning the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921. As a child, he could not speak fluently until the age of 9. In fact, during the first few years of his life, his parents thought he was mentally retarded. Einstein faced school expulsion and was refused admission to the Zurich Polytechnic School.
