5 Qualities of Every Successful Senior Home Care Owner

By Jeff Bevis

We are constantly asks what it takes to be successful in home care. Many people ask if they need experience in healthcare. However, we've seen that determiners for success are not as much about experience as it is about personal attributes.

Over our 30 years of experience, we've worked with a number of franchise owners — both wildly successful and unsuccessful. Here are some of the key traits that we've noticed in our most successful home care business owners.

1. Desire to Help Others

To work in home care services, having a deep-rooted desire to help others is a must. Many of our best franchise owners find deep satisfaction and personal fulfillment in being able to make someone's life a little easier and give back to their community.

There are many difficulties that come with running a senior care business. It may not have the highest profit margin compared to other industries. However, it does provide an opportunity to interact with individuals on a daily basis. As a human-centric industry, this type of work can be extremely rewarding for the right individuals.

If you are looking for an opportunity to help others every single day and make a direct impact on your community, home care could be a great fit.

2. Connection to Seniors or Home Care

Many people assume that to work in elder care, you need a health care background. That's simply not true! However, a key trait of our successful home care owners is a connection to seniors or the home care industry.

For example, many of our owners learned firsthand about home care after taking care of a loved one. They often struggled with providing care or finding a professional caregiver to help their family member. Some even saw their loved ones receive poor care services, and they wanted to do something more to help protect other aging individuals.

Perhaps, like owner Cathy Trlica, they saw the decline of a loved one but didn't even know that home care was an option. Cathy's grandmother was placed into a care facility as her health declined. Shortly after, she passed away, having wanted so badly to remain at home.

But you don't have to have had an experience with home care either. Some of our successful franchise owners just have an affinity for working with the elderly. This natural talent allows them to provide excellent home care services.

3. Passion for Business Ownership

Another key for a successful franchisee is an entrepreneurial spirit. Business ownership is hard, and it's not for the faint of heart. But individuals with a passion to run a business will stick with it.

Franchising offers a unique opportunity for entrepreneurs because you don't have to build the business from scratch. You can tap into the proven business model and established brand of your franchisor, giving you a greater chance for success.

The good news for entrepreneurs is that the home care industry also boasts strong growth potential. Over the coming decades, the senior care industry will boom as the number of seniors continues to grow. With that, the preference of individuals to age at home grows stronger, too.

4. Strong Leadership Skills

Successful small business owners must also posses strong leadership skills. A home care business often has lean office staff, who mange a large pool of caregivers. A strong leader is required to ensure that your team is working together effectively.

A good leader also embodies the spirit of the home care brand and helps to carry out its vision. They also guide the team during times of difficulty and help motivate each team member to reach their goals.

Our most successful franchise owners are strong leaders who make themselves available to their team. If this sounds like you, then you might want to consider a senior care franchise.

5. Determination

The home care industry can be rewarding, it can also be extremely tough. As an owner, you will have to deal with the very real fact of death. You will also have to educate many families and companies on home care, because it is still widely unknown as a service. You will be faced with the challenges of managing caregiver schedules.

To be successful in the industry, our owners need to have grit and determination. They need to be okay with dedicating long hours when required and stepping up if something goes wrong. But many are excited to take on these challenges and accept the hustle of being a business owner.
